When Volvo announced its latest addition to the Volvo Recharge lineup, there were many drivers that questioned, "What's the difference between the Volvo C40 Recharge and the Volvo XC40 Recharge?". While these two Volvo SUVs do have many similar features, they are more unalike than you think.

The History of the "C" Models

The Volvo brand has had "C" models for many years. The latest was the Volvo C30 and Volvo C70, a unique-looking hatchback and convertible in the 2013 model year. While those versions have left the Volvo lineup, it's time to reintroduce the "C" collection with the new 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge.

Exterior Differences

Both vehicles are similar in height and length and look about the same from the front. The main difference is the roofline and rear end. The Volvo C40 Recharge replaces the flat roofline of the Volvo XC40 Recharge and slopes it down to the beltline. The taillights then form an S-shape up the sides of the Volvo C40 past a small spoiler and two air deflectors. Both models offer a sporty overall look, but the Volvo C40 Recharge resembles more of a racecar.

Performance Differences

The Volvo C40 Recharge and Volvo XC40 Recharge have the same all-electric powertrain. Dual electric motors combine with an all-wheel drive system to create up to 402-horsepower and 486 pounds-feet of torque. The same 78-kilowatt battery is also included, which comes with plenty of miles for your Saint Paul or Edina commute. The only major difference is the number of miles available on a full charge. The Volvo XC40 boasts up to 208-miles, and the Volvo C40 comes with up to 210-miles. Whichever you choose, you'll find a quick charge time of 40 minutes for up to 80-percent charging.

Interior Differences

With the sloping roofline, the Volvo C40 Recharge comes with less headspace than the Volvo XC40 Recharge, but it's still plenty of room for your rear passengers to sit comfortably. A large panoramic glass roof comes standard, allowing it to seem like the cabin is larger. Each model can also carry up to five passengers and has plenty of adjustable cargo space available.

In the Volvo C40 Recharge, everything is made with sustainable features and respectful luxury. It's the first leather-free Volvo vehicle, but that doesn't mean it's not just as lavish. The interior trim has been partly made from recycled plastic, and the carpet is created with 100-percent recycled PET plastic bottles.
